An Egyptian government official reported that Egypt's natural gas LNG imports reached their highest level in July 2024, totaling 21 shipments, due to increased local demand for gas amid rising temperatures. Egypt began importing LNG in April 2024 to bolster electricity sector supplies and reduce outages, and expanded these efforts at the start of 2025 by leasing four regasification units to increase capacity. Currently, Egypt has an onshore regasification unit operating in the Aqaba port in Jordan, allowing it to convert LNG into gas for injection into the national grid. Despite rising global gas prices, spot prices remain high, nearing twice their levels before the start of the U.S.-Iran conflict.
