A recent study suggests that individuals who live to age 110 or older possess a high proportion of a rare type of immune cells known as "T cells" (CD4) with lethal characteristics. These cells, which comprise up to 17.6% of the immune profile in supercentenarians, tend to increase with age and may help enhance an effective immune system capable of countering age-related changes, including fighting abnormal cells and potential tumors. Analyses have also indicated that some of these cells can recognize cancerous cells early on, although this does not conclusively prove that they are the cause of longevity or that they directly prevent cancer. The findings reinforce the idea that the adaptation of the immune system with age may play a role in enabling some individuals to reach extraordinary ages.
