Northern California Tribe Opposes Redwood Trail

The article discusses the controversy surrounding the proposed 307-mile Great Redwood Trail in Northern California, which is planned along an abandoned railroad line. Tribal members, especially from the Wailaki tribe, oppose the trail's development due to concerns about trampling sacred sites, ancestral villages, and graves without proper tribal consultation. Despite support from officials and the belief that the trail could bring economic benefits and environmental restoration, tribes argue that the project's exemption from the California Environmental Quality Act undermines their rights and cultural heritage. Efforts to involve tribes have been criticized as inadequate, and some advocates call for rerouting the trail to avoid damaging sacred lands.
