LA schools tout scores despite low student achievement
Los Angeles public school officials celebrated slight improvements in students’ test scores despite the majority still failing to meet basic reading and math standards. Only 48.3% of students met or exceeded state standards in English, and 39.7% in math, with these figures only slightly higher than the previous year. Critics argue the district’s focus on small gains masks ongoing systemic failures amid a financial crisis that includes proposed billions in cuts and staff layoffs.
