NASA is participating in Japan’s Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission, which aims to study Mars' moons Phobos and Deimos and collect samples from Phobos’ surface for return to Earth. The mission, led by JAXA, is scheduled to launch on October 19 from Japan and aims to arrive at Mars by August 2027, with Phobos sample collection planned for December 2028. NASA contributed instruments, including the MEGANE spectrometer, and will provide communication and navigation support through its Deep Space Network.
