Alan Mandell, a renowned actor and interpreter of Samuel Beckett’s work, died at age 98 in Westwood. He built a distinguished theater career starting in Toronto and was instrumental in founding the San Quentin Drama Workshop, creating the first extended prison theater program in the U.S. His stage work often focused on challenging roles, and he performed well into his late 80s, including productions of “Waiting for Godot” and “Endgame.” Mandell also appeared in several films and TV shows, but his primary passion remained theater.
