BBC: Syrian general linked to atrocities received US and Lebanon support

A former Syrian general wanted for crimes against humanity, Bassam al-Hassan, is being protected and funded by US and Lebanese authorities in Lebanon, where he is believed to be hiding. The BBC investigation revealed that Hassan, involved in Syria's chemical weapons program and linked to the disappearance of journalist Austin Tice, has received protection in exchange for providing information about Tice’s abduction and other intelligence. Despite efforts by Syrian officials to repatriate Hassan for trial, US authorities reportedly prefer to keep him in Lebanon, where he continues to receive benefits, raising concerns about ongoing assistance to a wanted war criminal.
