Somerville's 'Neighborway' aims to improve road safety

Somerville has implemented a series of street redesigns on Tufts Street to reduce traffic speeds and prevent accidents, turning a previously easy-driving road into a more cautious, pedestrian-friendly “neighborway.” The changes include narrowing lanes, installing speed humps and pinch points, and adding visual cues such as pavement markings and a large mural, aiming to slow down vehicles and improve safety for cyclists and residents. The initiative is part of the city's broader strategy to transform side streets into calmer routes and to repurpose major roads like McGrath Highway for slower, safer travel. The enhancements have received mixed reactions from residents, but the city reports no recent traffic deaths despite high cyclist activity.
