Tennessee prison chief steps down after execution failure
The Tennessee Department of Correction commissioner resigned after a failed execution attempt of Christa Pike, who survived two rounds of lethal injection and was hospitalized in critical condition. The governor announced the resignation amid an investigation into the botched execution, which occurred after Pike's 1995 murder conviction. The incident prompted a halt to all executions in Tennessee for the rest of 2026 and increased scrutiny of the commissioner’s record in overseeing prison deaths.
