Saudis shift from U.S. protection to new alliances

Saudi Arabia is seeking new military alliances after the United States declined to respond to recent threats from Iran-aligned Houthi rebels, who have seized territory along the Red Sea and threatened Saudi shipping routes. The kingdom has formed a 15-nation maritime coalition and a NATO-inspired security pact with Turkey and Pakistan, while also maintaining talks with the United Arab Emirates and potentially Israel, amid escalating regional tensions. These efforts come as Saudi Arabia faces economic strain from attacks on its energy infrastructure and a contraction in oil activities, prompting a shift in its security and diplomatic strategies.
