California license plates may change soon

California has exhausted its current license plate sequence, which has been in use since 1980, and has begun issuing plates with a new format. The previous sequence ended with the 9ZZZ999 plate, while the new format, starting to be produced but not yet issued, features three numerals, three letters, and one numeral. This new configuration is expected to last around 40 years, offering over 100 million combinations, and plates are manufactured by inmates at Folsom State Prison.
