The US Department of Justice charged 17 Iranians involved in a cyber-espionage campaign aimed at stealing academic research and intellectual property from hundreds of universities worldwide. The hackers, linked to the Mabna Institute and allegedly acting on behalf of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, targeted over 100,000 professor accounts, stealing more than 31.5 terabytes of data across fields such as science, medicine, and social sciences. The campaign, which lasted from around 2013 to December 2017, also compromised numerous government agencies, private sector entities, and media organizations, with some defendants facing charges including conspiracy, wire fraud, and identity theft.
