Big Bang fix may extend spacecraft mission

NASA engineers successfully implemented a power conservation strategy, dubbed the “Big Bang” fix, on Voyager 2, enabling it to operate its remaining science instruments for at least another year. This involved turning off some heaters and devices and switching on lower-power alternatives to extend the spacecraft’s mission in interstellar space. A similar approach is planned for Voyager 1, which may also regain a previously shut-down instrument and prolong its historic journey beyond the heliosphere.
